Alton Celebrates Five Years Volunteering at Valerie's House

There isn’t a day that goes by when long-standing Thursday night volunteer, Alton, doesn’t think of his mom and dad.

Alton lost both parents to a tragic incident in 1987 on his first day of summer vacation after graduating middle school.

“Life, as I knew it, changed forever,” Alton said. “Working with the kids has helped me get through some of my own struggles [like] letting go of anger and resentment.”

Alton began volunteering with Valerie’s House in 2016 after learning that Angela Melvin, a friend from college, is the founder and CEO.

Five years later, Alton is one of the most dedicated group facilitators at Valerie’s House.

“Valerie’s House has grown so much,” Alton said. “Young children and teens need someone who will listen to their grief journey without judgment. [Group night] has taught me how to listen and gain the respect and trust of others who are sharing something so personal.”

Alton has watched the grassroots effort of Valerie’s House develop into the three current locations in Southwest Florida. He noted that the expansion to Pensacola this year was a huge success.

Valerie’s House recently presented Alton with an award in appreciation for his dedication and service for bettering the lives of grieving children.

“I am humbled and grateful for the recognition, but it’s really about the kids and helping them navigate their grief journey,” Alton said. “Valerie’s House is a great organization, and I am blessed to be a part of it.”
