Tips to Help Someone Who is Grieving
A Resource for the Community

The Valerie’s House Programs Department has developed a “grief tips sheet” for the community. This informational hand-out may be helpful for schools, organizations or businesses looking for best practices to support grieving students, members or employees.

The more we understand grief, the more we can support those around us going through it.

At Valerie’s House, we refer to the Six Needs of Mourning and the Four Tasks of Grieving to help guide our families through their grief journeys. These guidelines, as well as our own experiences with grieving families and insight from mental health professionals, helped inform our beliefs about grief:

· Each person has the capacity to heal.

· Grief is individual.

· Grief is personal.

· There is no timeline for grieving.

· Grief comes in waves.

· You don’t just get over grief, you learn to live with it.
